Even for a small nation like Israel, a century of history is a lot of ground to cover; hence the book is a high-level survey of the relevant history.Grabbe’s book seeks to illuminate the origin of Israel. This is not easy, as the biblical accounts were written long after the events which they describe. He gives a survey of the history of the Ancient Near East from 3000 to 900 bce so as to provide the context for the history of Canaan. Grabbe is guided in his study by a number of principles.
